Weapons: Iron Weapons and Compound Bows
Iron originated from Mesopotamia, replacing bronze around 1000 BCE. Some of the reasons for this is because iron was cheaper than bronze, more widely available, as well as being harder and more durable than bronze. Little is known about the history of iron weapons because they would corrode during excavation. This was due to lack of exterior processing. The first people known to process iron were the Hitties. Iron metallurgy spread from Hittie to the rest of the Middle East in the 12th century BCE It is thought that iron was discovered on accident by ore falling into a fire, thus producing wrought iron. Iron armor eventually came to replace leather armor during the Han dynasty.
Bows and arrows date back to around 8000 BCE. The first fragments of bows came from Stellmoor bows that originated from northern Germany. Composite bows were bows that were made from animal tendons that were stretched over animal horns. Bows were the main weapon that the soldiers of Hittie used in battle.
