Deforestation
The Roman Empire was the main cause for deforestation in the Mediterranean world. Wood was one of the most basic building supplies at the time, so forests were cut down to help house people.
Wood was also a main source for heat. his was a huge factor of deforestation in Rome as well. Heat was needed in certain industries such as inning, where wood would be greatly needed.
In Rome, agriculture was a big part of life. In order for agriculture to be successful, it was necessary to clear forests to make room for crops and such.
Julius Caesar ordered his troops to cut down forests so there would be no possibility of sneak attacks. Without forests. other militaries would have nothing to use for camouflage.
Shipbuilding was another contributor to deforestation. The ships were made out of wood, which would mean going to the forests for this supply.
